CEO/Director of Player Development
Chris Brazelton, AKA “Coach Braz,” originally from San Bernardino, CA, has 9 years of Division 1 Coaching experience and 3 years of Division 1 playing experience. Coach Braz concluded his playing career at Fresno State University, earning the scholar-athlete award in 2005. Upon graduation from Fresno State in 2006, Brazelton started Collegiate Coaching Summer 2006 at the University of New Orleans. Following a year at UNO, summer 2007 he was hired as an Assistant Coach at the University of California, Riverside. During a five year span at UC Riverside, Coach Braz developed both guards, as well as big men in the BIG WEST Conference. Spring 2012 he was hired as an Assistant Coach at Drake University in the Missouri Valley Conference. Following completion of a year at Drake, Brazelton was hired in Spring 2013 as the Associate Head Coach at San Jose State University. Concluding the 2014-15 season, Brazelton decided it was time to pursue his dream of creating his own company and pouring into the lives of young people around the Bay Area.
Off the basketball court, Braz was recruited to be a part of Pepsi Cola’s college recruitment, business internship program in 2006. He then went on to complete a year of M.A. work at the University of New Orleans, and became an M.A. Strategic Communications Honors Graduate from National University in 2009.
Paul Simpson originally from Oakland, California is an experienced professional, both within business as well as the basketball realm. Paul played at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) from 1997-2000. As a freshman, he was voted Most Improved Player. From 2001-2003, he served as Assistant Coach, responsible for individual player development, recruiting, and operations management. Off the court at UCSC, Paul’s accomplishments included: • Serving as Chapter President of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) • Participating as a member of the Black Men’s Alliance (BMA) • Being an INROADS scholar working for Hitachi Data Systems Paul graduated UCSC with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management/Economics.
In 2005, he founded SageTel Solutions, which later grew into SageTel International, a boutique international wireless consulting firm. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of SageTel International, which specializes in mobile network deployments/ managements and valueadded services including location-based services for wireless carriers across the globe. In 2007, Paul was recognized in the Cambridge Who’s Who of Technology for excellence in the wireless industry. That year, he also cofounded WiBlaze India Pvt Ltd, which is a metropolitan internet service provider (ISP) offering WiFi connectivity at affordable prices. In addition, Paul is on the Marin Academy Board of Trustees, and is an active member of both the Marin Academy and UCSC Alumni Associations. Paul’s experiences in both basketball and business allow him to effectively help student athletes achieve success on and off the court.
AAU Program Director
Ward Burton aka "Coach Ward," comes to BMG with 20+ years of coaching and training experience. A North Hollywood native, and local Los Altos High School product, competed for four years in the program and immediately began a coaching career. A 2009 Sacramento State Graduate with a B.A. in Early Childhood Development, Coach Ward is a very driven, motivated, talented teacher, Coach Ward brings a lot of substance and leadership to the BMG community.
While attending Foothill Junior College, Coach Ward was the Youth Sports Coordinator at the Mountain View YMCA. In 2010 he was named Head Coach at Saint Andrews in Saratoga California, leading the program to a winning record in back to back seasons. Following Saint Andrews, he spent two years as Head Coach at Rolling Hills Middle School in Los Gatos California. From 2015-19 Coach Ward led Fisher Middle School to three undefeated seasons and league titles. He has transitioned to BMG Academy and brings this level of quality experience and success. In conjunction, Coach Ward spent time in the South Bay Area with several AAU Programs and helped developed a tremendous amount of talent.
In his spare time, Coach Ward enjoys watching movies, listening to music, and playing in adult league basketball. We are excited to have Ward as a BMG Coach and leader in our community.
Program Events Coordinator
Olivia Ly , born and raised in San Jose, CA. joins BMG as a highly motivated and driven individual, specializing in improvement processes, energy & cost efficiency, social media advertising, and event planning. Olivia has over 10 years of experience as a Board Trustee for an employee association, with over 29,000 members, organizing and hosting large corporate and fundraising events. Additionally, she has over 20 years of customer and community service experience, including scholarship application reviews for high school and college and has spent a decade in the San Jose community, mentoring adults and children of all ages. We are excited to have Olivia play a key role in the BMG program and community.
Middle School Coordinator
Coach Elijah comes to BMG from Folsom, CA after a basketball playing career of twelve years and an extensive AAU background. With former High School Varsity level experience, Coach Elijah competed for many AAU teams throughout the Sacramento area; Sacramento Yellow Jackets, Norcal Hurricanes, and Norcal Predators to name a few. With a wide range of AAU history, he brings to the BMG program a high level of experience of learning how to compete against Bay Area teams.
Coach Elijah joined BMG coaching staff in the summer of 2017. Since joining the staff he’s participated in all BMG Summer/Winter Elite camps and won multiple championships on the 12U, 13U, and 14U level. Primarily used as a point guard his whole life, he approaches the game with a high level of basketball IQ. Having a wide range of coaches and coaching styles, he learned a variety of teaching styles and strategies of the game; very applicable to BMG teaching.
Outside of basketball, school and family are his top priorities. As a former De Anza College graduate, Coach Elijah currently attends San Jose State University and is actively pursuing his Business Marketing major, and has been named to the Dean’s list with a 3.5 GPA. He notes his Godfather Todd Purves, a professional basketball coach overseas, as someone he admires due to his passion for the game and life of the phrase that: "There is no substitution for hard work!" We are honored to have Coach Elijah onboard with BMG!
Senior Head Coach
Coach Jay has been coaching youth basketball in the Bay Area since 2015. Getting his start as a coach at a local YMCA, Coach Jay developed a passion in teaching the game and helping the youth. Since the YMCA, Coach Jay has coached basketball competitively at the NJB, AAU, and high school level. Most recently, he served as the JV GBB assistant coach at Saratoga High School, helping a team of 9 freshmen and 1 sophomore win the De Anza league title in their first season. Coach Jay hopes to bring his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game to BMG.
Outside of basketball, Coach Jay has a passion for cars, music, and sneakers. Professionally, Coach Jay works for an alternative energy company in San Jose. In 2014, Coach Jay graduated from San Jose State University, earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
Fitness Specialist/Head Coach
Coach Randy, originally from San Jose CA, is a passionate learner and student of the game. Having played basketball at Del Mar High School, he led the varsity team in points and rebounds, receiving multiple All League Awards. Entering college, an ankle injury shortened his collegiate career shifted his focus towards coaching. Over the last decade, Coach Randy spent two years with the YMCA, a year with Willow Glen NJB All-Net, and five years with AAU program Top Flight Elite, prior to joining the BMG Academy staff.
Professionally Coach Randy works as a Personal Trainer. He enjoys being in a position to help others reach their goals; this translates directly towards his coaching. With his skill set Coach Randy is able to bridge the gap between basketball skills & athletic performance.
In his personal life Coach Randy enjoys a diverse list of activities. The three most notable are BMX bike riding, skateboarding, and working on his cars. We're excited for the positive energy Coach Randy brings to the BMG Family.
Jesse Moreno, aka “Coach Moreno” is originally from Salinas, CA. He is entering his first season with BMG Academy. For the past three years he was coaching with a local AAU program, Silicon Valley Stars. Coach Moreno was the starting point guard for Palma High School, a top program in the Central Coast.
Professionally, Coach Moreno works at Santa Clara University in their Athletic Department. He oversees all aspects of ticket sales and operations for their Division 1 sports. Coach Jesse obtains a B.A. in Communications and M.A.in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Management from Saint Mary’s College of California.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, Crossfit, attending sporting events, and traveling.
Coach Sayre was born in Eugene, OR and has been raised in San Jose Ca. He went to Leigh High school and graduated college from Grand Canyon University with a degree in applied business management. Coach Sayre has coached youth sports for over 7 years and loves playing and watching basketball. He is currently the coach for the boys basketball team at Dartmouth Middle School where he has been for multiple years.
Outside of BMG coach Sayre is a Youth Pastor at a local church in south San Jose where he teaches, supports and mentors kids of all ages. He has also worked as a lead teacher for multiple after school programs in the San Jose and Cupertino area at the elementary and Middle school level where he focused on sports and teaching the kids how to thrive on and off the court. With his free time coach Sayre enjoys spending time with his wife and his family, playing sports, kickboxing, playing guitar and taking his dog to the dog park and visiting other countries. Coach Sayre's joined BMG Spring 2020, we are excited to have him involved with the program.
Coach Nomso comes to BMG from Oakland, CA and carries an assertive mentality and passion for the game. Nomso played high school basketball at Mount Eden high, Hayward, ca and helped his team successfully capture a playoff berth; something that had not been done in roughly 30 years. Following his high school Nomso went on to compete at feather river college, playing two years at the junior college level.
Nomso brings energy and intensity to BMG and cares about helping youth. We are excited to have him on board, and allow him to share passion and enthusiasm with anyone he comes in contact with.
DaRon Jacques Burgess born and raised in San Francisco,Ca comes to BMG as a talented student-athlete with a passion for the game and people. A Mountain View High School 3 year varsity player, Coach Daron competed at a high high school level, and played with the Oakland Rebels and Bay Area Ballers AAU organizations. After played one season at San Jose City College, Daron currently is competing at De Anza college for the 2019-2020 season.
Coach Daron educationally is working towards his psychology degree, with a vision of one day having his own sports psychology clinic. This clinic would deal with athletes who suffers from depression and anxiety, helping them to overcome life challenges and adversities.
Robert Passalacqua, aka "Coach P", returns to BMG Academy for his 3rd season total after missing a full year of action. He has 11 years of coaching experience; 4 as an assistant and 7 as a head coach at St. Lawrence Middle School. He has coached for 2 seasons with BMG previously in 2018.
He also has playing experience at Bellarmine College Preparatory and with a Foothill NJB team that made the national semi-finals his senior year.
Outside of BMG, Coach P is a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher at St. Simon Parish School in Los Altos. He graduated from San Jose State in 2017 with a B.A. in English and a minor in Kinesiology. That said, Coach P does not only know the game, but knows and understands how to teach the game as well.
Monique Theodule – Graves, aka “ Coach Mo” has played competitively since the 6 th grade and has an extensive AAU background with programs including San Jose Lady Lakers, Cagers , Wildcats, and the Killer Bees where she won a National Championship title in Kona, Hawaii. Monique then played Varsity for the #1 nationally ranked Basketball Program at Archbishop Mitty High School under the direction of exceptional Coach Sue Phillips. Monique has coached for various NJB teams and AAU programs and hopes to pass along her knowledge and passion for the game with BMG!
Monique attended the University of San Francisco where she studied Sociology and Psychology. Currently, she has 8 years of teaching experience and is also a Senior Recreational Leader for the City of San Jose. She enjoys giving back to the community and mentoring adults and children of all ages. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out and training her son, attending sporting events, and traveling.
Will Dean, born and raised in Atlanta, GA, played high school basketball in a very competitive league, and was a Varsity player for two years. A graduate of Mississippi State University in biological engineering, Coach Will was very involved in on campus department organizations and activity within the community.
Will moved to the S.Bay, from Atlanta, in February, 2019 and began Coaching with BMG. As a Coach, he is a gifted guard skills trainer, and very knowledgeable relative to the game of basketball. A young leader, with high aspirations in life, Coach Dean has impeccable character and will set a great example as a young community leader. We welcome Will to the Bay and Bay Area Basketball!
Special Assistant to the Director
Matt Hubbard, is originally from Colville, Washington and has 4 years of Division 1 and 2 playing experience at Santa Clara University and California Baptist University.
Coach Matt started on his high school varsity team all four years and played on a top level AAU team based out of the Seattle area traveling to tournaments across the United States. He started the majority of the season his freshman year at Santa Clara and was a member of the West Coast Conference All Freshman Team. During his one year at Cal Baptist, his team advanced to the Elite 8 winning 28 games in their final division 2 season as they are now a division 1 program.
After finishing up his playing career last year he has been coaching youth basketball players around the Bay Area and working in the construction management field as an Assistant Project Manager. He holds a BA from Santa Clara University, which he acquired in three years and a Masters degree from California Baptist where he graduated with a 3.9 GPA.
Shooting Skills Specialist
Nate Kratch, a former professional and Division 1 basketball player, originally from Minnesota came to San Jose in 2012. Nate started his collegiate basketball career at Santa Clara University, and was a member of the Santa Clara’s basketball program for 5 seasons. A 3 year starter, Nate played in every game (129) after redshirting in 2012-2013.
Coach Kratch ended his career ranked 6th on the school’s all-time games played and his 129 consecutive games played is tied for first in school history. During his senior year, Nate averaged 11 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and earned honorable mention All-WCC honors; shooting a team-high of 48.8 percent from the floor and 42 percent in 3-point shooting. He ranked 12th in field-goal percentage and sixth in 3-point shooting percentage in the WCC conference during his senior year.
Off the court, Nate was a three-time member of the WCC All-Academic team and was the seventh player in school history to be selected three times. Also, he is a two-time nominee for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and earned a spot on the 2016-2017 All-District VIII team.
After graduating from Santa Clara University, Nate played in the first division in the Netherlands for the Aris basketball club from 2016-2017. After playing for one year, Nate returned to Santa Clara University to finish his master’s in counseling and he joined the men’s basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 2017-2018 season; A phenomenal addition to the BMG Academy staff and a high character, talented individual.
Coach Kai comes to BMG after playing 4 years at Santa Clara University from 2014-2018. Over his 4 years, Coach Kai played in 112 games, of which he started 39. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Kai grew up in Sydney, Australia and represented Australia for the U/19 team in the FIBA Oceania Pacific Tournament.
His parents are Heidi and Mike, and he has two brothers, Conner and Cameron. His younger brother Cameron is currently playing at UAlbany and was recently named a top 25 freshmen for all of D1 NCAA basketball, alongside the names of Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, and the like. His grandfather, Don Healy, played in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys. Kai comes from an amazing basketball background with a lot of knowledge and competitive fire. We are excited to have this caliber of a player and coach join BMG Basketball staff.
Player Recovery Specialist/Assistant Coach
Matt Mackowiak was apart of the Butler University Men’s Basketball program as a manager/practice player. After graduating with a degree in Elementary Education, he went on to pursue several certifications in the realm of fitness (indoor cycling, yoga, personal training, group fitness). Since moving from Indiana to California, Matt has refined his knowledge and practices to focus solely on “Active Recovery” which aims to help athletes recover after workouts faster and safer. Additionally, he works with athlete’s mental health and focus to elevating not just the athlete but the human being as.
